A tree’s extensive root system often heaves upward which poses a danger to concrete foundations and walkways. Some tree varieties simply grow shallow roots and others send roots upward in search of water during times of drought. Soil also plays a role in the depth of a tree’s root system growth. Trees growing in clay soil often produce a shallow root system.

Trees are at the mercy of nature. High winds, ice storms and heavy snow loads often snap large tree branches or may even blow down an entire tree. The weight of a falling limb or tree can easily crash through a roof or porch, or take out gutters. Limbs can even fly through windows during high winds.

Planting extensive trees in an area that is prone to wildfire can pose a significant risk to a home. Fire will leap from tree to tree until it ignites the home next to the trees. Avoid planting trees close to a home in a fire-prone area.
